Harrow West MP Gareth Thomas has described Transport for London's plans to build six 20-storey tower blocks near Harrow-on-the-Hill underground station as "Trump Towers."

TfL is planning to allow the homes to be built to fund the development of the train station and bus depot in an effort to deliver local station improvements for the Harrow station.

Although no decisions have been made on the development, TfL hopes the development will bring a number of benefits to the area, including step-free access to Harrow-on-the-Hill, an upgraded bus station to increase capacity and improved safety.

A new urban realm and public space would, it says, improve access on each side of the station.

However, Mr Thomas MP is campaigning against the plans, arguing full public consultation is needed, as well as wanting to see a full financial breakdown and all the options for the access works made available.

He also wants a Harrow-residents-first policy for any flats built as part of the development.

Gareth Thomas MP is unhappy with the proposals

Speaking of the development, he said: "Transport for London appear to be planning their own version of Trump Towers, huge blocks of flats with little housing that Harrow residents can buy or rent.

"We are expected to believe six massive blocks of flats are needed to pay to make the station accessible.

"Harrow residents, like others in outer London, have seen fare rises of between 40% and 60% over the last eight years, and its time Harrow residents had a direct say in what TfL does in our area."

Graeme Craig, commercial development director for TfL, however, has said that once a plan is formed for the station, TfL will be consulting fully with local residents for feedback.

He said: "Harrow-on-the-Hill Tube station is one of many sites we are considering for development, as part of our wider plans to address London’s critical need for affordable housing and generate income to reinvest in the transport network.

"Development at Harrow-on-the-Hill would be focused on delivering local station improvements, including step-free access.

"No decisions have been made on a development at Harrow-on-the-Hill, and we’ve begun conversations with the new Mayor’s team about increasing the number of affordable homes that could be delivered on the site.

"We are also speaking with the local authority, Gareth Thomas MP, and other local representatives. Once a plan is formed, we will fully consult with those who live and work in the area for feedback on the scheme."
