A celebrity hotspot for dining in Mayfair received a shockingly poor rating for food hygiene after "mice activity" was discovered.

Scott's in Mount Road, Westminster , is notorious for spotting Hollywood A-listers and its exquisite seafood and a lavish wine list.

But the restaurant's recent cleanliness and food safety levels has earned it a score of one out of five.

Westminster Council officers slashed the hygiene rating from five to one, following a visit on February 13 this year.

A council spokesman told the Daily Mail Online: "During the inspection it was noted that there was a significant issue with mice activity throughout the premises and poor standard of cleaning was identified.

"Scott’s is working closely with the Food Team to rectify all issues and a rating re-inspection will be carried out in due course."

It required major improvement in its "cleanliness and condition of facilities and building" to enable good hygiene from falling so low, a recent inspection uncovered.

This included having appropriate layout, ventilation, hand washing facilities and pest control.

Huge strides had to be taken to improve its "management of food safety".

A food safety officer for Food Standards Agency (FSA) noted in the report: "System or checks in place to ensure that food sold or served is safe to eat, evidence that staff know about food safety, and the food safety officer has confidence that standards will be maintained in future."

The food handling recorded a generally satisfactory standard which looks at the hygenic handling of food including preparation, cooking, re-heating, cooling and storage.

Since the report, the kitchen has undergone a full makeover which was planned in May last year.

The restaurant re-opened its doors to diners earlier last week and has clawed back its five star rating following a re-inspection.

A spokesman for Scott’s said: “We are shocked that the council found a reason to reduce our rating despite 10 years with a spotless record.

“The issues identified were dealt with immediately and we pushed for Westminster Council to return and regrade us before we closed for a long-term planned refurbishment of the restaurant.

"This has been a wake-up call for us, and we have taken on board that we must rely ultimately on our own staffing as well as outside experts."

A spokesman for Westminster City Council said: “This was a one-off incident, and Caprice Holdings and Scott’s restaurant subsequently worked proactively with the council’s Food Team.

"Scott’s has made a number of changes and has now returned to a food hygiene rating of five stars, a rating that it has held for many years."
