Police say 76 people have been arrested outside Westfield Shopping Centre after 'a number of incidents' occurred during the pre-planned protest advertised as `die in for Eric Garner'.

An estimated 600 people gathered at the centre in Shepherd's Bush for the so-called 'die-in' demonstration.

The arrests were made when a breakaway group assaulted security staff and damaged property.

The protest was in solidarity with rallies in the US prompted by the death of Eric Garner, a black man who died during an arrest in New York in July.

According to police shortly after 8:20pm on Wednesday, a group of protestors broke away from a larger group and attempted to force entry to the shopping centre assaulting security staff and causing damage to property.

In response to this police say they used a number of tactics - including a 'containment for the purpose of preventing violence and effecting arrests'.

Seventy six people were subsequently arrested on suspicion of public order offences; one man was further arrested on suspicion of assault.

They have been taken to various London police stations for questioning.

Chief Superintendent Mark Bird, in charge of the policing operation said: "We will always work with those that wish to demonstrate lawfully - as the majority of protestors did yesterday. However, we will not tolerate the small minority that offer violence or commit other criminal acts, such as that witnessed outside Westfield yesterday evening."

Many of the Westfield protesters were holding signs with the same 'Black lives matter' message seen in American demonstrations where thousands have taken to the streets.
