You can see what happens when you put youngsters in charge of the decorations at a 17th century manor house, in a new exhibition.

Young people from Hounslow and Richmond sought inspiration from the rich history of Boston Manor House , in Brentford , to produce a new exhibition.

The result is the exhibition Wigs, Windows and Wallpaper, in which they add their own contemporary twist to more than 400 years of changing fashions at the Grade I-listed building.

More than 60 young people worked with artists from Orleans House Gallery in Richmond on the Heritage Lottery Fund project, which was designed to breathe new life into Boston Manor House.

They produced animations, tapestries, plasterwork and furniture influenced by the styles of the Jacobean era.

To get the creative juices flowing they visited Boston Manor House, in Boston Manor Road, Brentford, which has undergone significant alterations over the years, and Ham House, in Richmond, which is relatively unchanged since the Jacobean days when it was completed, to explore the collections. They also spent time at the Victoria and Albert Museum in South Kensington .

Kate Kennedy, youth programme coordinator at Orleans House Gallery, said: "The young people involved have worked extremely hard over the past couple of months, learning ‘hands on’ creative skills to gain a better knowledge of how 17th century craft and architecture.

"They have re-interpreted the histories of these two Jacobean houses into this exciting immersive contemporary exhibition."
