A security scare meant hundreds of passengers were evacuated from Baker Street station during the evening rush hour on Thursday (July 7).

Trains did not stop at the station after the platforms were closed shortly before 4pm, causing major delays to services.

Specialist officers from British Transport Police attended and assessed the scene, before ascertaining the package was safe and not a threat.

It has now launched an investigation into the circumstances of the incident.

BTP said the station began reopening at around 4.30pm.

Ryan Cahill wrote on Twitter: “Sirens and staff shouting for everyone to get out at Baker Street Station.”

And another Twitter user posted an image of the crowds outside the station, standing beside the famous statue of Baker Street’s most famous resident, and wrote: “Holmes remains unperturbed.”

The House of Parliament were in lockdown earlier the same day, as police closed off the building following the discovery of a suspect package .

It is thought this may have been a package containing white powder delivered to the a Labour peer.
