Members of the public are being reminded to have their say on updated plans to protect properties in west London from the misery of sewer flooding.

Thames Water is inviting residents from Kensington and Chelsea and Hammersmith and Fulham to give their views as part of the second phase of consultation on the £250 million Counters Creek storm relief sewer.

Following the first stage of consultation, which began in November 2014, Thames Water has changed a number of the originally proposed sites having listened to feedback provided by residents and representatives from both boroughs.

The latest consultation will run until April 5, with an additional five drop-in sessions on top of the 15 sessions held so far to give more details of the scheme and and gather comments on proposals for the five associated construction sites.

Sewer flooding a 'truly horrific' experience

This first phase of the consultation and subsequent public engagement sessions saw hundreds of residents, business owners and other interested parties provide opinions on 16 potential sites following an initial assessment of 250 locations.

The five preferred sites to construct the storm relief sewer are:

  • Cremorne Wharf Depot, Lots Road, Chelsea
  • Land adjacent to Talgarth Road and Trevanion Road, Hammersmith
  • Maclise Road car park and woodland adjacent to Kensington Olympia Station
  • Holland Villas Road at its junction with Lower Addison Gardens, West Kensington
  • The car park at Tesco Superstore, Shepherd’s Bush Road

Counters Creek project director, Martin Bennett, said: “The new storm relief sewer is vital to protect local properties most at risk from sewer flooding.

"Anyone who’s had sewage flood their property will tell you it’s a truly horrific experience and we want to be able to provide peace of mind to everyone who has been through this ordeal.

“We really value feedback from people in the area on this important project and encourage them to come and see us or send in their comments. This consultation will help us further understand what matters most to residents and what else we can do keep disruption to a minimum.”

Comments to be included in planning application

The additional drop-in sessions will help ensure residents are provided with every opportunity to learn about and comment on the plans for each of the five sites before the close of the consultation period.

The views of residents, together with the company’s responses, will form a report which will be submitted alongside the planning application to both Kensington and Chelsea and Hammersmith and Fulham later this year. Further consultations will then be held by both local planning authorities.
