This glamorous scientist from Whitton has made it her mission to raise environmental awareness after being crowned Miss Earth England.

Katrina Kendall defies the usual stereotypes about beauty pageant contestants, boasting a first class masters degree in chemistry from the University of Edinburgh.

She specialised in environmental and sustainable chemistry during her studies, spending a year in Switzerland researching storage for hydrogen fuel.

The 26-year-old now works as a school ambassador for the charity STEMNET, encouraging more young people to study science, technology, engineering and maths.

Miss Kendall was named Miss Earth England at the contest in Birmingham on Saturday (August 29). She was also awarded the prize for best online profile and finished in the top five in the eco interview round.

She will now represent her country at the international Miss Earth finals in Austria this winter, which last for three weeks.

"It's a dream to hold the national title of Miss Earth because it's unique in terms of beauty pageants as it has a positive message of promoting
environmental awareness across the world, a cause close to my heart," she said.

"I want to empower people to make change through education and by raising environmental awareness."

Outside her day job, Miss Kendall, who describes herself as half Filipino and half British, says she volunteers on eco projects with groups from the South West London Environment Network. She also enjoys travelling and spending time with her family.

She said she worked from 11am to past midnight on both days of the competition, completing tasks including designing a T shirt highlighting her eco, as well as the more traditional evening wear round.

Miss Earth is one of the 'big four' most prestigious beauty pageants, with the finals attracting an estimated global TV audience of 70 million.

It was established in 2001 by Carousel Productions, with the aim of promoting environmental protection.
