Roadworks were causing gridlock in Twickenham as the school run got underway on Tuesday (September 6) morning.

Motorists reported queues up to five miles long on the A316 into town in Twickenham from Apex Corner in Hanworth , to the Twickenham Bridge junction on Twickenham Road, Richmond , where National Grid Gas works are taking place.

One Twitter user said the works could have timed better, preferably during the school holidays.

@Totallydriving tweeted: "TfL didn't think to get the Twickenham bridge roadworks done before school term @ getsurrey ! 5 mile jam / A316"

However, Transport for London (TfL) has warned drivers to expect delays during peak travel times since works began on July 31.

Currently there is one lane closed in both directions approaching Twickenham Bridge.

However, due to the nature of the work there are likely to be various lane closures in place, in line with the different phases of work.

TfL's traffic status updates said: “[A316] Twickenham Road (Both Directions) between Twickenham Bridge and Parkshot - Various lane closures in place (in different phases) to facilitate National Grid Gas works.

“Lane one is currently closed both ways approaching Twickenham Bridge.”

Works will continue to be carried out with lane closures in place until October 14, just before the next set of half-term school holidays.
