Sadiq Khan jokingly remarked how he would not be silenced by President Donald Trump after his mic momentarily stopped working during a speech before The Salesman screening.

After his microphone stopped working and was traded with a new one, the Mayor of London told audiences, " President Trump can't silence me", in a dig to the overseas leader on Sunday (February 26).

It happened whilst Khan gave a speech on the executive order banning US travel for seven predominantly Muslim countries.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan addresses the crowd as thousands gather to watch a free screening and UK premier of Iranian film The Salesman in Trafalgar Square on February 26, 2017

Thousands gathered to Trafalgar Square for the free screening of Iranian director Asghar Farhadi's film The Salesman after the director was caught up in the ban.

Farhadi, 44, did not attend the Oscars ceremony, where the film won best Foreign Language film, because he said that issues with a potential entry visa were unacceptable.

The screening was scheduled by Khan after Asghar Farhadi announced he would boycott the ceremony.

In his speech, the Mayor told Londoners: "The great thing about this city is that we don't tolerate difference, we respect it, we celebrate it and we embrace it.

"And those are the foundations upon which the success of our city was built and we must never forget that."

His words come not long after his appearance on Peston on Sunday, where the Mayor said Donald Trump's visit to the UK should be cancelled after the "cruel and shameful" travel ban.

"The great thing about this city is that we don't tolerate difference, we respect it, we celebrate it and we embrace it"

Prime Minister Theresa May, however, previously said the state visit will not be cancelled.

Should Trump visit, the main meeting has snubbed London, and is due to be held in Birmingham instead.
