Ealing Central and Acton MP Rupa Huq wants more protection for women who enter abortion clinics but face harassment on their way in.

Earlier this month Dr Huq and Sister Supporter, an Ealing-based organisation, took their concerns to the House of Commons earlier this month.

It came in response to a number of women facing alleged harassment from pro-life protesters outside the Marie Stopes abortion clinic in Mattock Lane, Dr Huq said.

According to Sister Supporter member, Anna Veglio-White, women who enter the clinic are faced with A4 sheets of unborn fetuses and are made to feel uncomfortable on their way in.

MP Rupa Huq is calling for measures to protect women who enter abortion clinics

DR Huq wanted to request "buffer zones" outside abortion clinics in the UK at Home Office questions, but her request was not drawn for Monday (January 23).

However, Dr Huq insists she will press ahead with the target and will seek alternative ways to protect women entering clinics.

She is also considering writing to Home Secretary, Amber Rudd.

She said: "I have witnessed firsthand the goings on at Mattock Lane and all too often it is totally unacceptable that vulnerable women have to run the gauntlet to receive the help of which they are entitled.

"Women face intimidation on a daily basis as they enter the Mattock Lane Marie Stopes pregnancy clinic from protesters, with rosary beads and gruesome images of foetuses."

Miss Veglio-White, a textile graduate, said Sister Support began with just 20 members but has since expanded to around 500.

She said: "I grew up in Ealing, and had moved back and I couldn't believe they were still there.

"Rupa came to our most recent demo which was in December, she had been quite vocal.

"This is fantastic coverage for the issue and we are optimistic about the effect this could have.

"There will be a lot happening in the coming few weeks and months."
