Ruislip boxer Paul Blower is stepping into the ring to raise money for the Northwood hospice that cared for his mother before she died of cancer two years ago.

Carol Blower passed away in December 2015 and was looked after by staff at Michael Sobell Hospice.

Mr Blower steps into the ring on Friday night (March 10) as part of the IWA white collar boxing event in Harrow .

The event is being held at the Harrow Leisure Centre in Christchurch Avenue and Mr Blower has been through six weeks of intensive training in the lead up to the big night.

He said: “I wanted to raise money and awareness for Michael Sobell Hospice as a thank you for how the hospice staff and volunteers helped my mum.

“She visited Michael Sobell once a week – a volunteer driver would pick her up and drop her home each week and she relaxed and enjoyed taking part in arts and crafts activities and having lunch, with a cheeky glass of wine now and then.”

Mr Blower's mum Carol died of cancer in December 2015 and he thanked the staff at the hospice for caring for her.

Michael Sobell Hospice, based at Mount Vernon Hospital in Northwood, provides end-of-life care for people with life-limiting illnesses.

The centre is this year marking its 40th birthday and is holding a variety of events to mark the occasion.

First opening its doors in 1977, Michael Sobell Hospice mostly cares for people from Hillingdon, Harrow, Hertfordshire or Buckinghamshire.

Mr Blower added: “Most importantly my mum looked forward to the day, as she could spend time with people who knew what she was going through, but where she still felt independent and in control.

“These were such valuable moments in my mum's life, and for that I wholeheartedly thank the team at Michael Sobell Hospice.”

The fight takes place at the Harrow Leisure Centre with doors opening at 7pm.
