Youngsters have another reason to get excited about the Rugby World Cup, with schools closing early to help parents avoid traffic on the tournament's opening day.

A number of schools close to Twickenham Stadium, where the opening ceremony will take place on Friday September 18 have opted to send pupils home up to two hours early.

The opening ceremony does not start until 7pm, but congestion on roads and public transport is expected to build up well before then.

Commuters have been advised to consider leaving work early and using alternative routes where possible.

The following schools in the borough of Hounslow are all closing earlier than usual on the day, according to their websites:

Gumley House Convent School, Isleworth - finishing at 2.10pm

The Smallberry Green Primary School, Isleworth - 2pm

Lionel Primary School, Brentford - 1.30pm

The Green School, Isleworth - 2pm (the school is holding a target setting day, with no lessons)

Marlborough Primary School, Isleworth - parents are being given the option of picking their children up from 1.30pm
