A council car park is being rented out to Rugby World Cup spectators in a move which could generate up to £100,000.

Fans can leave their vehicles at the multi-storey car park outside Hounslow Civic Centre, in Lampton Road, Hounslow, and catch a free shuttle bus to Twickenham Stadium - which is hosting 10 games during the tournament.

The park and ride service will cost £20 per vehicle, meaning that if all 500 spaces are fully booked for all 10 match days, the total income would be £100,000.

It is not known how much of this cash will go to the council and how much will be used to cover running costs but a council spokesman said the revenue would "fund the council's operations generally".

Hounslow Council said the multi-storey car park and visitors car parks at the Civic Centre would not be available to members of the public or staff on the following match days.

The council said arrangements had been made for blue badge holders to park on site, but other visitors would have to use alternative means of transport.

The park and ride scheme at Hounslow Civic Centre is one of two being operated to prevent fans clogging up roads around the stadium, where parking restrictions are in place and there is no dedicated spectator car parking except for blue badge holders. The other is at Kempton Park Racecourse.

Places at both sites must be booked in advance and the service will open five hours before the match (or the start of the opening ceremony on Friday September 18) and close three hours after the final whistle.

Free shuttle buses from both locations will run every five minutes, with buses to and from the Civic Centre also stopping to pick up and drop off passengers at Hounslow Central tube station, which is on the Piccadilly line.

The journey from Hounslow will take about 10 minutes and buses from Kempton Park will take 15 minutes.
