A wheelie bins roadshow will hit the streets of Ealing ahead of the new recycling and rubbish collection system being introduced this summer.

A series of events are being held across the borough to offer people advice and information on the new service, which begins on June 6.

The move has not been without controversy, with some describing the new wheelie bins as an eye sore .

And 3,000 signed a petition objecting to them being introduced to 92% of the leafy borough.

Those attending can see the new bins, talk to council officers about how the new service will work and get expert advice on how to recycle more.

The new system will see rubbish and recycling collected from wheelie bins on alternate weeks, with rubbish one week and recycling the next. Food waste will continue to be collected weekly.

Personalised letters are being sent to 95,000 properties in the borough with information on how the new service will work and the council has also set up a Facebook page to keep residents informed and give useful tips on how to recycle more. Wheelie bins will start to be delivered to households in May.

Changes to bin collections in Hounslow this week have also caused upset, with a former councillor claiming the situation has reached meltdown as some residents are yet to even receive the correct bins.

'Ealing residents want to recycle more - and this is how to do it'

Keith Townsend, executive director for environment and customer services at Ealing Council , said: “I know that a lot of residents want to do the right thing and recycle more and, based on the experiences of other London boroughs, the move to wheelie bins should help to achieve this.

“We are committed to keeping residents up to date about the upcoming changes and these roadshows will help to keep residents informed. I hope that local people will pop along on one of the dates, say hello and see the wheelies for themselves.”
