You can learn how sniffer dogs are being used to snuff out illegal tobacco, at a series of road shows in Hounslow .

Events are being held across the borough to highlight the dangers of counterfeit cigarettes and the steps being taken to catch the crooks peddling them.

Members of Hounslow Council 's trading standards team will demonstrate how to spot non-regulated tobacco and how harmful it can be.

They will also explain how dogs are trained to sniff out stashes of illicit tobacco, which includes foreign and counterfeit cigarettes as well as those on which no tax or duty has been paid.

'Battle against unscrupulous smugglers'

The road shows are being held on the following days:

  • Monday, March 14, 10am-4pm, The Centre, 154 High St, Feltham , TW13
  • Tuesday, March 15, 11am-3pm, West Thames College, London Road, Isleworth, TW7 (for college students, only)
  • Thursday, March 17, 10am-4pm, Hounslow car park (opposite Asda), Holloway Street, behind the High Street, TW3
  • Friday, March 18, 10am-4pm, Tesco Extra, Syon Park Gardens, Isleworth , TW7

Visitors will get the chance to win £50 in Argos gift vouchers at each roadshow by completing a survey about their understanding of illegal tobacco and its effects.

Councillor Richard Foote, Hounslow Council's cabinet member for community protection, said: "We can only win the battle against unscrupulous smugglers and irresponsible businesses with help from our residents.

"Come along and help us end this potentially fatal trend and raise awareness of the dangers counterfeit tobacco poses to our community."
