A summer fun day held by a pioneering disability organisation proved a roaring success.

Revellers got their claws into a host of activities laid on by WeAre1 in Hounslow on Saturday (August 1), from sponge-throwing to karaoke.

The organisation threw open the doors of its home at the Alf Chandler Centre, in Benson Close, Hounslow, to celebrate its success and help publicise the wide range of services it offers there.

WeAre1 was formed in 2011 to help former users of mental health charity the Star Centre, in Hounslow, which closed earlier that year.

Founders Ronnie Doran and Katrina Foreman wanted to bring those with mental health issues together with people who have physical and learning disabilities, hence the name they chose for the new organisation.

It now regularly attracts 45 people to its sessions every Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, where activities range from computer training to dance therapy.

WeAre1 also has 18 volunteers, many of whom are studying for NVQs in health and social care or food and hygiene. Earlier this year it signed a 'hiring agreement' with Hounslow Council for continued use of the Alf Chandler Centre, giving it a more secure future.

Mr Doran said it had been a great day, even though he had taken 30 wet sponges in the face before having the paddling pool tipped over his head.

"We wanted to do something to thank the people who use our service for trusting us and coming along each week, and we're delighted with how the day went," he added.

He said there were around 130 visitors and thanked those who supported the event, including the local police.
