Police have reopened investigations into a string of west London crimes after Levi Bellfield's confession of the murder of 13-year-old Milly Dowler.

The former West Drayton bouncer is suspected of being involved in up to 20 serious attacks, including rapes and murders, dating as far back as 1980.

Police confirmed that Bellfield, who converted to Islam five years ago and now calls himself Yusuf Rahim, has confessed to other attacks.

Metropolitan Police are now co-ordinating a massive investigation that could lead to him being convicted of even more murders.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: “We can confirm the Metropolitan Police Service is liaising with a number of other UK police forces in relation to information which has been passed on to us regarding a number of criminal investigations.”

Bellfield is also serving a life sentence for killing 22-year-old Amelie Delagrange, and Marsha McDonnell, 19, as they stepped off night buses in west London.

Bellfield was given a second life sentence in 2011 for the murder of Milly Dowler and will likely never be released from prison.

He was also convicted of the attempted murder of 18-year-old Kate Sheedy in 2004.

Unsolved crimes

The jury could not reach a verdict on the attempted murder of Hounslow hairdresser Irma Dragoshi , 33, who was battered with a blunt instrument as she waited for a bus in 2003.

The case of Anna-Marie Rennie, 23, who identified Bellfield as the man she alleged tried to bundle her into a car at nearby Twickenham in 2001, also remains unsolved.

It is believed that he may have claimed his first murder victim when he was just 12.

His school friend Patsy Morris disappeared one lunchtime in June 1980. The 14-year-old’s body was found later near her home in Hounslow and her murder has also never been solved.

They first met in late 1979 at Feltham Community School and dated briefly in the months before she died.

At least four other women reported being attacked in circumstances that matched Bellfield’s methods before he was caught.

  • Sonia Salvatierra, 26, was assaulted and robbed at Twickenham in November 2002

  • Dawn Brunton, an accounts clerk aged 36 suffered a fractured skull in a suspected hammer attack in Hatton Cross in November 2003

  • An unnamed 17-year-old reported being set upon in January 2003 as she walked home near Strawberry Hill in Twickenham and was smashed in the face with a blunt instrument

  • Edel Harbison, who survived a hammer attack in April 2004 near Twickenham Green, said she was “convinced” Bellfield was responsible when she attended his murder trial

The former police detective who led the investigation into Millie Dowler's death recently said on Thursday (January 28) he believes Bellfield's confession is in 'hopes to get parole under Human Rights law'.
