Public car parks in west London cover a total area of nearly 3.9km² - nearly three times the size of Hyde Park .

The findings by new parking service spacehopper (CORR - lower case S) also reveal car parks in the west of the capital account for nearly half the car parks in London.

The findings show Hillingdon has the most car parking spaces in west London, but this figure is hugely inflated because of Heathrow Airport .

If this was to be taken away from the tables Brent would top the table for parking spaces, but this borough is also home to Wembley Stadium and Wembley Arena .

Overall, London’s public car parks cover an area of 8.4km², while west London’s coverage is 3.9km² - equivalent to 550 Old Trafford football pitches.

spacehopper offers peer-to-peer parking by matching under-used spaces on private driveways with drivers who are looking for somewhere to park.

Director Alex Walker said: “It’s amazing – but not surprising – to think that so much valuable space is taken up by parking spaces in the UK. By better utilising the resources we have across the land, we really don’t need to build any more car parks.”
