Return of the Zac: Goldsmith wins for the Tory party with an extremely tight count in Richmond Park

It was a very close call, with recounts being called before Zac Goldsmith was announced as the winner

Zac Goldsmith returned to the Conservatives with a nail-bitting win in Richmond Park.

Mr Goldsmith, who left the party following the Cabinet's approval of a third runway for Heathrow , shocked voters when he announced a return to the party in the run up to the snap election.

By 6.30am, recounts had begun as the battle between Goldsmith and Liberal Democrat hopeful, Sarah Olney, came down to the wire.

In the end, Goldmisth won with an excruciatingly close 45 votes.

He said: "I'm grateful to my constituents for having put their trust in me again.

"I hope that I will never let them down - we have the most special community in the world and representing them is an unimaginable honour."

He refused to answer questions on the future of Theresa May following his election speech.
