Residents 'deeply concerned' after Harrow stabbing as Assembly Member calls on Mayor to save police station

Navin Shah says residents are 'deeply concerned' after four men were stabbed in Harrow's town centre

The London Assembly Member for Harrow has written to the Mayor in a plea to save the borough's last police station, after four men were stabbed.

Navin Shah, Assembly Member for Brent and Harrow, says residents are "deeply concerned' in the aftermath of the recent knife incident in the town centre.

Four men were stabbed outside Harrow-on-the-Hill Tube station after a "large fight" in the early hours of Sunday (July 9).

It saw one of the men, a 23-year-old, fighting for his life in hospital, in a critical condition after sustaining an injury.

Luckily a first aider, with Scout training, used his shirt to stem the man's blood flow and save his life, and he is now in a stable condition.

Mr Shah hopes his letter to Sadiq Khan will convey the serious concerns expressed by local residents and stakeholders about knife crime in the borough.

A meeting was organised by the Metropolitan Police Service, supported by Harrow Council, to update and reassure local residents, at Harrow Civic Centre on July 12.

Concerns were raised about the incident, and police were called to address the root cause of knife crime.

Mr Shah said reseidents also were alarmed about the cuts in police numbers, lack of uniformed officers and future of South Harrow Police Station.

“In the aftermath of the recent knife incident in the town centre and following the fatal knife stabbing in March in Harrow, no wonder Harrow’s residents and stakeholders are deeply concerned about safety," he said.

"Given the worrying trend of knife crime in London and 24 fatalities already this year I very much welcome the Mayor of London’s Knife Crime Strategy which was launched in June.

"I have written to the Mayor of London conveying the deep and genuine concerns of our people in Harrow about the knife crime and their safety.

"There is an urgent need to robustly implement Mayor’s knife crime strategy in Harrow.”

Mr Shah, who ran as the Labour MP candidate for Harrow East, stated that he has consistently lobbied the former Mayor Johnson and the current Mayor Khan against loss of the local police station in South Harrow and Harrow's local Borough Commander under the potential merger of Harrow, Brent and Barnet Borough Commands.

He added: "I believe that such plans are short sighted and will not help local policing which is so vital to safety and security of our communities.

"I will keep on pressing the Mayor on all such issues to keep Harrow safe.”
