Asda has finally opened a new flagship superstore in Hayes.

The 44,000sq-ft local store, in Millington Road, opened at 10am on Monday (July 6) with a special ceremony, providing 300 jobs for the community.

Special guests included Councillor George Cooper, Mayor of Hillingdon, and schoolchildren from Botwell House Primary School.

Queues stretched out the store and along the road - with some waiting for almost an hour to get into the store.

Registered childminder Amanda Hopson, who lives only a 15-minute walk, from the store said: "It was heaving this morning at the opening, you couldn't move!

"I’ve wanted an Asda around here for years and years.

"Me and my friend wanted to go and have a look and see what they've got, our main aim was to look around George clothes.

"We gave up as there were so many trolleys we couldn't move anywhere!

"We started queueing at 9.45am and we finally got in at 10.30am.

"When we left at about 11am, the queue was just as long so we plan on going again later this week."

She said she was pleased to see the new shop open: "This is a welcome addition to Hayes, we've waited a long time for a local Asda.

"The food is a lot cheaper. We were over-the-moon when it got the go-ahead. I think it will bring people to Hayes because the nearest Asda is in Hounslow."

Speaking before Monday’s opening, new store manager Lee Randall said: "Colleagues have been putting in a lot of hard work behind the scenes to get the store ready and we can’t wait to show it off.

"We have a full morning of fun planned, with a performance from No Biz Like Show Biz at 9.30am ahead of the launch.

"At 10am we have the Mayor of Hillingdon and Hannah Swain from Botwell House Primary School cutting the ribbon. Hannah is the winner of our bespoke Bag for Life competition – the bag she designed will be available in store from next week!

"We also have the school choir from Botwell House Primary School joining us at 11am to perform for shoppers – we’re looking forward to a fun day!"

The superstore includes a food hall, home and technology sections, and a George section stocking the clothing brand’s latest designs.
