A public golf course in Hounslow is set to close this September, and part of the land could become a travellers site, it is understood.

Staff at Hounslow Heath Golf Centre have been told by Hounslow Council it will close by the end of September, according to two sources, who asked to remain anonymous.

getwestlondon has been told by sources close to the golf course, in Staines Road, Hounslow, that part of the land is due to become a travellers site.

A council spokesperson confirmed the golf course was closing and said it would be "kept secure" until a decision was made on the future of the site.

She added that there were "no current agreed plans for the site to become a travellers site".

She said the course was being closed as the contract with the company running it was coming to an end.

There has been speculation over the future of the course since plans for a theme park, zoo and driving range on the site were rejected in March.

Hounslow Council had advertised the land for sale in 2014 , saying the course was underused and was costing it £120,000 a year in running costs.

The council offered theme park operator Kidspace a 125-year lease on the land, subject to planning permission being granted, to open a sister attraction there to the Hobbledown park in Epsom .

But councillors rejected Kidspace's planning application amid concerns over the loss of public access and the environmental impact.
