Plans for a contentious new North Kensington Library will be displayed at a series of public exhibitions in October and November.
They will take place at two venues over six dates and allow members of the public and library users to speak to the project team and architects Piercy & Company.
Kensington and Chelsea Council want to relocate the facility in Ladbroke Grove , once called “one of London’s finest public libraries”, around the corner to a new-build in Lancaster Road.
The council says the current library, built in 1891, is poorly insulated, expensive to heat, and as it is listed, hard to renovate to meet modern requirements.
It is also spread over three floors, which makes access difficult for people with mobility issues and children, it argues.
Watch protesters disrupt K&C Council meeting
The council wants to move to Lancaster Youth Centre and redevelop the site, saying that although the youth club is generally fit for purpose, it is not energy efficient, relatively costly to run for its size and is not the most efficient use of the large site.
However, there is anger at plans to lease the current library to Notting Hill Prep School , leading to a string of demonstrations which culminated in the disruption of a council meeting in June by Public Not Private campaigners.
The Greens also oppose the plans to let a private school take over the building, and Sian Berry, who was elected as a London Assembly Member for the party in May, visited the site and joined protesters in the run-up to the London and Greater London Authority elections.
K&C asked library users, residents and local community and voluntary organisations what they would like the new library to contain in a survey over the summer.
In total there were 629 responses, with feedback calling for a large selection of books, magazines and newspapers, quiet reading and study areas and excellent wi-fi and IT facilities.
