Anti-third runway banner at foot of giant rugby ball at Heathrow airport

It was a clear touchdown for one anti-third runway protester who embarrassed Heathrow Airport bosses this week.

A local resident, who wishes to remain anonymous, managed to raise a few eyebrows after placing a banner - reading: "Kick the 3rd runway into touch" - at the foot of a giant, inflatable rugby ball outside Terminal 3.

The 5m ball was unveiled by rugby legend Will Greenwood as part of Heathrow's official role as a provider to the Rugby World Cup 2015, currently under way across the UK.

The move was another score for protesters who have been making their voices heard against plans for a third runway at the west London airport.

The anonymous protester said: “The fight against Heathrow Airport is just kicking off.

"If they think they can destroy our homes and our communities, they can think again.

"The environment is also under threat, with the aviation industry contributing to climate change.

"David Cameron told us ‘no ifs, no buts, no third runway’, which, unless he was telling porkies, sounds pretty conclusive to me."

A Heathrow spokesperson said: “Whilst we understand that there remains some opposition to our plans, more than 50% of local residents do support our new approach to Heathrow expansion which has been created in close consultation with the local community.”
