A campaign group fighting against mass developments in Earl’s Court has launched an alternative film festival.

The first Earl’s Court Fringe Film Night will take place on November 9, and will coincide with the second Earl’s Court Film Festival whose chief sponsor is Capco (Capital & Counties Properties Plc).

The developer is the driving force behind redevelopment in the area, and it's their involvement which has led campaign group Earl’s Court Area Action Group (ECAAG) to organise the alternative event “in the interest of balance”.

A spokesperson said: “ECAAG’s aim is to stage an alternative event that is entirely free of corporate spin and is not driven by Capco’s cynical commercial interests, dressed up as caring for the very community its development is set to wreck.

“ECAAG’s fringe film night demonstrates the staunch resistance and resilience within the local community to stand up to Capco and their cohorts.

“ECAAG’s event keeps the spirit of rebellious creativity burning bright within Earl’s Court.”

The regeneration scheme will see 7,000 new homes built but has resulted in the demolition of the iconic and world famous Earls Court Exhibition Centre (see above).

It has also seen Capco involved in a long-running battle over the West Kensington and Gibbs Green estates, with 760 homes at risk.

The fringe festival will feature the latest documentary by film-maker John Rodgers. London Overground was partly filmed on location in Earl’s Court, with Mr Rodgers reporting on numerous issues including gentrification and its impact on social infrastructure. He will also feature in a Q&A sessions.

The event will also debut short films from young directors with close links to Earl’s Court who have filmed in the area.

Previously, Capco has defended its project. In 2014 investment director Gary Yardley said: “As well as creating a vibrant new part of London, the plans will act as an enormous boost to the economy, creating thousands of new homes and jobs and signalling an £8 billion investment in the local area.”

The Earl’s Court Fringe Film Night takes place at The Bolton pub, 326 Earls Court Road, London SW5 9BQ and starts at 7pm. Entrance is free, with donations welcome.

Tickets for the event are available from Eventbrite.
