The president of the Harrow United Deaf Club said he was stunned to receive an invitation to meet David Cameron in Downing Street last month.

Asif Iqbal MBE visited No 10 for a Community Champion reception hosted by the Prime Minister in January.

The event was held to mark the contribution people, such as Mr Iqbal, have made in their community, where they act as role models for others to follow.

At the reception, held on January 19, Mr Cameron thanked those present for their role in promoting community engagement and improving the quality of life in their area. Mr Iqbal was invited in recognition of his hard work with the local communities including as president of deaf club and ambassador of Harrow Art Centre.

During the function, the Prime Minister heard of Mr Iqbal’s achievements in Harrow and thanked him for his hard work in helping make Harrow a vibrant place to live.

Afterwards, Mr Iqbal said: “I was shocked when I received a letter of invitation from No 10, and I'm honoured to be recognised for my community work which I am passionate about.

“I hope to encourage and inspire local communities to give something back to the community. It could be something as simple as volunteering or as challenging as organising a variety of monthly events to educate and inspire others on various issues.

“It is so rewarding when you see your action made lots of difference in other people's life, creating happier communities.”
