Northwood Hills station was closed and several high street shops were left for hours without electricity on Tuesday due to a power cut.

The power failure started early and was still affecting some shops in Joel Street, Northwood, at 5.20pm.

The Metropolitan line tube station was closed from 6.54am to 7.34am, according to a Transport for London (TfL) spokeswoman, who said the closure was caused by “a local power failure”.

A spokesman for electricity provider UK Power Networks said: "A fault on an underground electricity cable interrupted power supplies to 84 customers in the Briarwood Drive area of Northwood Hills at 6.55am today.

"UK Power Networks engineers are working to excavate and repair the fault in order to restore all power supplies to normal as quickly as possible.

"We understand how difficult it is being without electricity and apologise to customers for any inconvenience this is causing."

Neal Adatia, manager at AMT Sports, in Joel Street, said around 10 shops near the station remained without power on Tuesday afternoon.

He told getwestlondon: “I think their lights are still off.

“We've had a busy day, so if we'd had a power cut it would have been bad for business. Everyone's lost trade.”

Matt Williams, a salesman at estate agency Bennett Holmes, in Joel Street, said: "Our officers are near the station and we haven't been able to open our offices, so it's not been a great day."
