A probe into an alleged £1m fraud involving two serving Met officers has been taken over by the police complaints watchdog.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) said on Thursday (April 14) it would take the lead on the investigation, which was originally launched by Surrey Police.

Surrey Police arrested four men on suspicion of fraud on March 18 following a report from the Police Federation of England and Wales, which has its headquarters in Leatherhead.

The IPCC said the allegations relate to the transfer of around £1million to a charitable account in August last year.

Two of the men arrested, all of whom have been bailed, are serving Metropolitan Police Service officers.

The others are a serving South Wales Police officer and a retired officer from Greater Manchester Police.

IPCC Commissioner Jennifer Izekor said: "We will carry out a thorough independent investigation into these serious allegations.

"The investigation is in its very early stages and we will be working closely with Surrey Police to ensure a smooth handover of the investigative work which has been carried out so far."
