Detectives are still hunting a man they say tried to rape a tourist in a 'violent and determined attack' in Westminster .

The 32-year-old woman was attacked from behind as she scaled the stairs at Waterloo Bridge on Friday, June 3, just before midnight, police said.

She bravely fought back and following a violent struggle managed to escape his clutches and flee towards Hungerford Bridge.

Police said the terrified victim was left severely bruised by the sexual assault, which took place on the north embankment, beside Somerset House.

They have issued a CCTV image of a man they wish to speak to in connection with the assault, but despite a previous appeal they are yet to identify him.

'Vital we identify this man without delay'

Detective Inspector Neil Rawlinson, of the Met's Sexual Offences, Exploitation and Child Abuse Command, said: "I urge the public to study the CCTV image carefully and call police immediately with any information that could be of assistance, no matter how small or insignificant it may seem.

"This was a violent and determined attack during which the terrified victim suffered severe bruising to her face and body. It is vital that we identify this man without delay."

The suspect is described as having a Mediterranean appearance and slim build, and being around 6ft.

At the time of the attack he had slight facial hair and was wearing a hooded top with white lining and light coloured jeans.
