The Metropolitan Police is carrying out a re-investigation into the planting of a bomb in a department store in July 1987.

On Saturday, July 11 1987, an incendiary device was detonated in Debenhams in Harrow , which police believe was linked to an anti-fur campaign.

The explosion reportedly did £340,000 worth of damage, and was part of a series of attacks on stores in the capital by what is believed to have been the Animal Liberation Front.

Police say that a team is now pursuing a number of lines of enquiry in relation to the attack, which were identified when reviewing the original investigation by the Bomb Squad.

Further investigation into the bomb threat will include using new advances in DNA techniques, which weren't available at the time.

There is also new information established by Operation Herne which looked into misconduct within an undercover police unit along with claims made under “parliamentary privilege” by an MP in 2012.

In 2012, Caroline Lucas MP said that a man jailed after the attacks, Geoff Sheppard, believed that undercover police officer Bob Lambert allegedly planted the bomb in the department store.

The officer helped convict two men of the fire bomb attacks and Mr Sheppard's claim was not proven.

Officers carrying out the re-investigation are led by a Senior Investigating Officer from within the Directorate of Professional Standards.

Police say that as the investigation is ongoing, they are not prepared to give a running commentary, or identify anyone who may or may not be subject of the investigation.
