A commuter was subjected to a racist abuse and had punches thrown at her while she travelled on the Tube .

British Transport Police has now issued a CCTV image of of a person they want to speak to in relation to the incident, which happened on April 7 at Piccadilly Circus station.

The victim, a 23-year-old woman, was travelling on the Bakerloo line between Waterloo and Piccadilly Circus at 6.50am when she was subjected to racist insults by a man.

She got off the train at Piccadilly Circus but was followed by the man who carried on shouting abuse at her, and then started throwing wild punches in her direction which failed to land.

PC Ben Pereira said: “While none of the punches connected with the victim, this was clearly an unacceptable and frightening incident.

“We all have the right to use the Tube without having to worry that we will be singled out for abuse or violence, and we cannot tolerate any form of hate crime.

“We have circulated images of the incident on police intelligence networks, but enquiries are still ongoing and I would like to ask the public for their help.

“The man in the image I am issuing today is someone who I think can help with our enquiries. Please tell us who he is.”
