A police investigation has been launched after the body of a suspected female was fished out of a canal - inside a suitcase.

The Met was called out on Sunday (May 10) to the Grand Union Canal in Maida Vale following reports of a body in the water.

The Marine Policing Unit, local police and fire fighters were all called to the scene near Delamere Terrace at around 2.30pm.

The canal was closed for several hours while the authorities dealt with the grim discovery.

A Met spokesman said: "A body, believed to be female, was recovered from the canal - the body was inside a suitcase.

"At this stage it is not possible to confirm how long the body had been in the water.

"The death is being treated as suspicious and enquiries are being carried out to establish the identity of the deceased.

"A post-mortem examination will be scheduled in due course.

"Until the post-mortem has concluded we will not speculate on cause of death.

"At this early stage no arrests have been made and the investigation continues."
