Security will be tightened at Notting Hill carnival after a string of gang crime related incidents in London.

Organisers have said security will be doubled at the annual event which sees around two million people pour into the streets of west London.

The news comes after a water fight which broke out in Hyde Park on the city's hottest day of the year escalated and left three people being treated for stab wounds, with more injured.

Shortly after, police released an appeal for witnesses after fast food giant McDonald's in Marble Arch was ransacked by large crowds who helped themselves to food on Tuesday (July 19), according to the Met.

Last year saw over 400 people arrested at the carnival, including a 17-year old who stabbed a policeman.

Residents also held a meeting in 2015 to discuss why crime rates were so high during the event, but forces have urged they will do their utmost to keep it under control on its 52nd year in August bank holiday.

In a meeting held at Kensington and Chelsea Town Hall, trustee director of the Notting Hill Carnival Trust Lewis Benn said: "An increase in the number of officers will allow police to do law enforcement, what their supposed to be doing and not the work of a steward."
