New police figures show hate crime against Muslims in some west London boroughs is rocketing.

Reports of Islamophobia in Kensington & Chelsea have risen by 250%, while in neighbouring Hammersmith & Fulham they have doubled.

They have also shot up by 233% in Hillingdon.

The statistics are revealed as part of the Met’s latest crime figures for London, comparing the number of crimes in the 12 months up to July 2015 with the 12 months up to July 2014.

They show reports of Islamophobic attacks and abuse rose from eight to 28 in Kensington & Chelsea. In Hillingdon, the figure increased from six to 20, while the figure doubled in Hammersmith & Fulham from 14 to 28.

Across London, police figures show the hate crime rose by 70%, putting the three boroughs well above the London-wide average.

Westminster also revealed figures above the capital average, with 74%.

Harrow, however, reported a drop in the number of incidents, with figures falling from 22 to 17, but Hounslow, Brent and Ealing all reported increases in the hate crime.

Phil Cooper is a member of the charity Hammersmith & Fulham Refugee Forum. He said: “These shocking figures reflect the consequences of so much anti-migrant, anti-foreigner rhetoric in certain national newspapers.”

He said the figures were expected by the charity: “There’s no surprise from our point of view. We keep a very close eye on statistics and check the Met statistics on a regular basis and we have noticed an increase of Islamophobic attacks and, in general, an increase in hate crime and religious crime.”

The Met says it believes the increase is due to a range of factors including a growing willingness of victims to report hate crime, an improved awareness of police staff in identifying these offences, and work with partners to support victims.

But Mr Cooper added: “While it is often said that such increases show better reporting and recording of crime, the statistics always under-represent actual incidents so these figures are a real concern.”

Commander Mak Chishty, head of hate crime at the Met, said: “We will not tolerate hate crime and take positive action to investigate all allegations, support victims and arrest offenders.”

He said there are over 900 specialist officers in Community Safety Units who are dedicated to investigating hate crime, and that it was looking for ways to make it easier for victims to report the offences.

He added: “No one should suffer in silence, so please report hate crime to us as soon as possible so we can act.”
