Police have carried out a controlled explosion in Hammersmith after the discovery of a suspicious package closed the tube station.

British Transport Police (BTP) were called shortly after 2.30pm on Tuesday (September 4) and closed the station, which serves the District and Piccadilly lines.

The controlled explosion at Hammersmith Broadway happened after 3pm, with members of the public advised to stay clear of the area.

BTP later said the incident is not being treated as suspicious. It added the station and surrounding area is now reopening following the security scare.

She was working when she heard loud sirens outside and looked out of her window. She said: "The police had blocked off the traffic and were getting people away from the area. Soon the street was completely empty.

"Then a special police car came down with two guys wearing special equipment. They were shouting at people to stay away, and for us to stay away from the window. It was scary.

"One of the special police guys had some sort of equipment and went to the strange parcel. The about 15-20 seconds later there was an explosion.

"Then after another five minutes it seemed everything was OK."

In August part of the Broadway was closed at Shepherd's Bush Road following a bomb scare.

And there was also a security scare at Putney Bridge station in July.
