Plans in Hounslow for a new £10 million grass roots sports facility have been submitted by Hounslow council.

The proposals would see the Grasshoppers Rugby Football Club (RFC) on MacFarlane Lane relocated to the Conquest Club sports ground (also known as the old Pyrene sports club) to nearby Syon Lane in Osterley .

To sweeten the deal of being moved to a smaller location, plans include an improved outdoor sports facility with a new clubhouse and six floodlit pitches, as well as spruced up changing rooms, a physiotherapy studio, gym, meeting rooms, offices, a club shop and floodlighting for night time use of the pitches.

While it lies on the same grounds as proposed new free school Nishkam School West London , meaning a shared use of the site, the project also looks to build better links with local schools in the area.

Design and construction consultancy Pick Everard have been appointed by the council to deliver the new sports facility project.

The current Grasshoppers site is still the favoured location to open a new secondary free school.

Allan Cowie, regional director at Pick Everard, said: “These proposed new facilities will provide Grasshoppers RFC the opportunity to strengthen and grow their current rugby and netball specialisms.

“The planning process to date has been challenging due to the shared use of the site with a proposed new free school but we are excited to be working on this leisure project for Hounslow Borough Council through our framework with them.”

The new and improved facilities hope to provide young people in the borough better access to rugby, football and netball, with three new floodlit rugby pitches and three floodlit netball pitches.

There will also be 150 car parking spaces and 16 cycle spaces built as part of the project.

In addition the club will be open for community groups use and more schools.

However, the sports ground is on Metropolitan Open Land (MOL) which gives it a similar status to Greenbelt land and must be protected as a large open space.

John Sharp, design director for Pick Everard, added: “We hope the project will further nurture the rugby club’s links with local schools, including Ashton House, Isleworth & Syon School and Gunnersbury Boys School and develop sports provision in the area.”
