Nearly 200 homes, a range of shops and a new nightclub would be built opposite Ealing Broadway station under new plans.

Developer Benson Elliot has applied to demolish buildings at 9-42 The Broadway and 1-4 Haven Place in Ealing Town Centre and replace them with a range of two to 18 storey buildings.

The new development, should it be approved, would include 191 homes and just over 7,500sqm of floor space for shops and leisure uses.

It would also contain a new nightclub at the site of The Ealing Club, the famous venue where the Rolling Stones got together and many seminal 60s bands played.

Benson Elliot and its development manager Londonewcastle say the new nightclub, to be accessed via Haven Place, would have 514sqm of floor space, making it more than twice as large as The Red Room, which is the venue's current name.

Their application to Ealing Council states: "The venue will be able to hold live music as well as other attractions such as performing arts, comedy and film screenings and has been designed with the help of local music heritage experts."

getwestlondon has previously reported on a campaign to save the existing venue, backed by music heritage heavyweights, due to its rich history.

But the developer has said a replacement venue is necessary as it is not possible to keep the building which houses The Red Room in its basement.

"A significant step in re-affirming Ealing's unique heritage"

It said the proposed new music venue on the plot of the Ealing Club, which will be linked to a bar/restaurant above, was designed following public consultation.

Robert Salmons, artistic director of the Ealing Blues Festival and a director of the Ealing Club Community Interest Company, described the new venue as a "significant step in re-affirming Ealing's unique heritage".

"Being Ealing born and bred, I can remember a time when it was one of the 'hippest' places around," he said.

"Over recent years there has been a resurgence of awareness of the borough's cultural importance and having a purpose-built music venue on the site of the former Ealing Club is a significant step in re-affirming Ealing's unique heritage."

A 6,000sqft flexible space in Haven Place which could house a boutique cinema, and amendments to the design of the building on the corner of Station Broadway and the Broadway were among the other changes the developer said it had made in response to public feedback.

How the proposed development would look, according to the developer

The proposals include 50 car parking spaces for residents and at least 306 spaces for bikes.

The new homes at the 0.62 hectare site would be mostly one and two bedroom flats, 56 of which would be classed as affordable, which is just over 29% of the total.

A new pedestrian route through the site is also promised, which the developer says will help connect the station with the town centre and Ealing Broadway Shopping Centre.

The developer also says its plans would open up a new view of the spire of Christ the Saviour Church and would see the public highway on Station Broadway widened.

Consultation on the plans started on August 21 and the deadline for representations is September 11.
