Plans have been unveiled for a new skate park in Acton to provide a "safe environment" for fans of the extreme sport.

A consultation has been launched by Ealing Council for residents to have their say before plans are finalised.

If the project is successful, it will be built at Acton Park near to existing play areas.

A spokesman for Ealing Council said despite the popularity of skateboarding and its recent adoption as an Olympic sport, there are very few dedicated skate parks in the west London area with just one in Ealing.

"Therefore skaters have to use non-designated public areas or travel to access such facilities," the spokesman said.

The facilities would be built in Acton Park

.

"Under the proposals, the skate park would be carefully designed and landscaped visually, so that it fits into the park.

"The council’s approach to designing the skate park is to integrate the facility into the community, to provide a safe environment for users and to encourage spectators to enjoy watching the skills and dedication on display.

"The council’s existing skate park facility near Gurnell Leisure Centre in Perivale has proven to be a great place of interaction between people of all ages, older children helping and teaching younger ones and adults skating with their children."

Cllr Bassam Mahfouz, cabinet member for transport, environment and leisure, described the current skate park as" a fantastic facility" that's well used and gives young people a safe space to enjoy.

"We want to hear from local residents about our proposals to build a brand new skate park in Acton and I encourage everyone to have their say," he said.

It would be located in the north east corner of the park

“We are committed to providing first-class facilities in the borough for young people taking part in sports.

"These proposals will give skaters a great space to enjoy and practice their sport in a safe environment and provide a real community asset.”

Residents have until Saturday September 16 to submit their responses to new skateboarding facilities on the council's website .
