Zookeepers at ZSL London Zoo have started the difficult task of counting all of their animals in this year's huge annual animal stocktake.

The park, which boasts 750 different species of animals, will count newborn baby gorilla Gernot this year as one of it's new members.

The one-month-old was seen cuddling his mother in their enclosure while his 13-month-old sister was seen swinging in the trees nearby when photographers visited the zoo on Tuesday (January 5).

Each annual stocktake means the organisation can collate and share information with other zoos to help manage worldwide breeding programmes.

Zoo manager Mark Habben said: "It's really important that we do the stocktake, it gives us an opportunity to evaluate what successes we've had throughout the year, particularly in breeding critically endangered species, like the Western lowland gorilla."

"We can learn a lot from each other."

As you can expect, some creatures are naturally more difficult to count than others.

The penguins lined up patiently to be counted, while fish need to have their picture taken to avoid counting the same fish twice, with Habben saying this was the hardest job.

"For the penguins, although we've got 73 animals in here, it's relatively easy because we can bring them in one by one," said Habben.

The annual stocktake, which reportedly takes a week to complete, is a requirement of ZSL London Zoo's license.

The information they collect is shared with other zoos around the world to help keep track and manage international breeding programmes.
