A woman from Feltham has rolled out an online petition to get Bedfont Lakes Country Park manned by rangers at all times during opening hours.

Following a savage attack in which two newborn lambs were killed and several sheep injured at about 5.30pm in the park last week, Karen Teulon, started the petition for the safety of visitors and animals.

She is urging people in the community to add their signatures, and join her Facebook group - Bedfont Lakes Safety Campaign - to support her move to get more park rangers to guard the grounds from opening till closing time at 9pm (summer season) in the hope of discouraging further attacks.

The 39-year-old of Southern Avenue, Feltham, who launched the petition, said: "I am a regular visitor to Bedfont Lakes and have been for a number of years.

"For the past 20 years there have always been rangers on site during all of the opening hours. However, I have noticed a lack of staff over the past few months and I discovered that the rangers now no longer lock the gates at the end of the day and a general labourer from Carillion PLC now does this.

"I have noticed a rise in antisocial behaviour at the lakes over recent weeks, and with the last school holidays and mild weather, there was a larger number of youths in the park.

"Waste was left lying all over the place, including piles of beer cans and bottles, and this was in more secluded places as well as on the larger open areas.

"In the evenings I have noticed a lack of rangers present and have seen the staff locking up the offices and leaving at 4.30pm. I have never felt unsafe at Bedfont Lakes but over the past few weeks I have begun to feel this way and have reconsidered walking here alone after 4.30pm."

Bedfont Lakes is managed and run by Carillion PLC on behalf of Hounslow council, and since March 2015 staff are only on site until 4.30pm after which the area is unmanned.

Ms Teulon has sent a letter of complaint to Carillion, and urged them to take on board residents views and ensure they improve the safety of the park and protect the wildlife from any further attacks.

Interestingly, Carillion have told Ms Teulon Hounslow council are responsible for the reducing rangers' work hours, while the council have said the day-to-day running is down to Carillion.

It seems neither organisation is prepared to take responsibility as quick as it is to pass the buck.

The livestock have been moved now but there has been some speculation over whether the attack would have occurred if rangers had been on duty, or at least the animals would have been discovered earlier.

Ms Teulon is concerned next time it could be a person, adding, "the rise in antisocial behaviour will continue with nobody there to prevent and police it and the remaining wildlife is at risk of attack from the evil deviants of society who get some kind of sick pleasure from these acts of violence.

"This is a highly important issue for the local community and this is something we can make a difference on.

"Bedfont Lakes is such a beautiful place and is used by so many members of the local community that it would be a real shame for it to become an area where people no longer feel safe."

The petition will be sent to Carillion PLC and the Parks department at Hounslow Council.

Martin Walker, strategic implementation manager at Carillion, said: “We were deeply saddened by the recent incident at Bedfont Lakes Country Park and have since moved the remaining sheep to a temporary location.

"The safety of the public, our staff and livestock is of paramount importance to Carillion.

"In agreement with Hounslow Council and while maintaining contractual obligations, Carillion continually reviews the operational arrangements across the various park sites including staff scheduling, land management and community engagement.”
