A man was rushed to hospital in a critical condition following a collision in Oxford Street.

The male pedestrian was hit by a bus on Oxford Street at the junction with New Bond Street at around 3.30pm on Monday (May 23).

Oxford Street was closed in both directions at New Bond Street and buses were diverted.

An investigation has been launched into the incident.

Officers, paramedics from the London Ambulance and London's Air Ambulance attended the scene of the accident and police urged the public to avoid the area as it became congested.

A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said: "A pedestrian has been critically injured following a collision in Oxford Street.

"The male pedestrian was taken to hospital where his condition is critical.

"Roads are closed in the area and buses are diverted. The public are advised to consider alternative routes."

Tony Akers, Transport for London’s head of bus operations, said: “At 3.30pm yesterday, a route 159 double deck bus, operated by Abellio, was involved in a collision with a pedestrian on Oxford Street at the junction with New Bond Street.

"Emergency services attended the scene. There will be a full investigation into the incident.”

During the early morning rush hour on Monday (May 23) an overturned lorry and fuel spillage on the M4 J4 Heathrow Spur caused motorists hours of delays.
