The brother of a murdered Hayes man was "horrified" to find his killers will appeal their sentences.

Father-of-three, Paul Thrower, died after two youths hit him with a 4ft long axe and stabbed him 10 times in the back near his home in St Dunstan’s Close, on February 20 2014.

Two of the three convicted men, Kiro Halliburton and Zakariya Subeir, will appeal the length of their sentences at the Royal Courts of Justice on Friday (October 2).

Halliburton, of Tollgate Drive, Hayes, was found guilty of murder and jailed for a minimum of 16 years, and Subeir, of Rockingham Road, Uxbridge, was sentenced to eight years for manslaughter, with an extended license period of a further four years.

Brother of Paul, Darren Thrower, was horrified when he was told the pair would appeal.

He told getwestlondon: “They have some nerve to go for an appeal.

“I think they should be given more time! I think it’s wasting court time, taxpayers' money, and it’s bringing it all up again.”

Darren was told of the appeal through a family liaison officer.

“These people going for appeal is like a kick in the face," he said.

“It’s affected me more than anything because I saw my brother all the time, I was constantly on the phone to him and every weekend when I went to London I was round his house.

“Now he’s gone, I feel like a part of me has gone. I’m not the same person I was. It’s like I’m having to rebuild my life as a different person.”

Darren, who now lives in Oxford, says there has been an “injustice” against his brother.

“My brother was being bullied by the them… the whole block was bullied by them, they were sitting in the stairwells the whole time," he added.

Jailed: Kiro Halliburton, Mahdi Osman and Zakariya Subeir

“They started spitting at his girlfriend and he just lost it, which is not like my brother, he liked to drink, but he’d sit at home have a drink.. he used to help everyone and really was a kind person, but to make him snap like he did, takes a lot.”

Mr Thrower confronted the youths, angered by their treatment of his girlfriend and months of aggravation.

On the evening of February 20, Ms Roberts, Mr Thrower's girlfriend, had been abused, spat on and had a drink thrown at her in the stairwell of the flats where Mr Thrower lived.

Mr Thrower went to remonstrate with the young men when Subeir hit him twice on the head and once on the shoulder with the axe while Halliburton stabbed him repeatedly in the back with a knife before delivering the fatal wound to the heart.

A third defendant, Mahdi Osman, who received five-and-a-half years in prison for his lesser role of passing the axe to Subeir, will not appeal.

Darren, who had brother Paul as the best man at his wedding, takes comfort in the good memories he has, to help him and his family through their horrific ordeal.

He said: “We used to go clubbing, my brother was a great dancer and was known for his dancing.

“He was very bubbly, his sense of humour and the way he was meant he was a really uplifting guy, all of his friends would tell you that. He was the life of the party.

“He was my best friend as well as brothers. He was my rock. If I had a problem he’d be there.”
