Parking charges in Hounslow are set to rise by a fifth, under moves to generate an extra £500,000 a year.

Starting from next month, motorists will have to pay £2.40 an hour, rather than £2, to use on-street parking bays across the borough, if the change is approved.

The cost of staying for an hour in a council car park, meanwhile, will rise from £1.50 to £1.80.

The hike in charges was approved on Wednesday (July 28) by Councillor Sue Sampson, Hounslow Council's cabinet member for community protection, in what is known as a single member decision.

She also gave the go-ahead to phase out parking meters in Hounslow and move to a wholly cashless payment system, which the council says will reduce thefts and drive down costs.

The council estimates increasing charges will generate an additional £500,000 a year, offsetting the anticipated loss in income from planned car park closures over the next year.

It says the income will be used to fund concessionary fares for residents using Blue Badges, Freedom Passes and Taxi Cards.

The council says the new tariffs still compare "favourably" with those in neighbouring boroughs like Ealing and Richmond and will not have a detrimental impact on town centre businesses.

The new charges are set to be take effect by the end of August, according to the council document.

Other west London councils have already voted to increase parking charges , as roads reach capacity in the capital.
