With the new law on child car booster seats coming into force early , parents are invited to free car seat seat clinics in Hounslow .
Families who want to make sure their child's car seat is in line with the latest guidelines can do so at one of two special events held by Hounslow council's road safety team next week.
Similar sessions last year found 76% of more than 300 car seats bought in to be checked had a fault.
- Monday (March 6) in the Tesco Osterley car park, Syon Lane, Isleworth
- Tuesday (March 7) at Sainsbury's car park, Essex Place, Chiswick
Changes in the law enforced on Wednesday (March 1), mean manufacturers will no longer be able to sell backless booster seats for smaller children.
It also means cushions must now be designed for use by children weighing 22kg (3st) or more or at least 125cm tall.
Previously the rules stated children weighing 15kgs (2st 5lbs) - which can include children as young as three to four years - could use a booster cushion (backless booster seat).
The change will not affect existing models which will still be allowed to be used.
Safety experts have warned a high-backed booster seat provides better protection to the head and chest in the event of a collision.
Councillor Sue Sampson, cabinet member for community protection at Hounslow Council, said: “Our road safety teams ran these sessions last year and upon checking over 300 car seats, found that 76% of them were found to have one fault or more.
“Even if you have recently had your child’s car seat checked, if you can get to one of the sessions, do so again in light of the new law.
"It is free to go along and any questions you have around car seats can be answered by our teams."
