The founder of a Hounslow dance group set up to steer young people away from crime has received a major honour.

Torron-Lee Dewar, who founded Alliance Dance Unit when he was just 16, visited the Palace of Westminster on Thursday (July 7) to collect his British Citizen Award.

The 23-year-old street dancer has already picked up a clutch of awards for his work with young people in Brentford , but described this as one of the most satisfying.

"It's overwhelming. It's up there with getting to carry the Olympic torch (in 2012)," he said.

"It's great to get such recognition for everything we've striven to achieve over the past few years.

"Dance kept me out of trouble when I was young, and I'm trying to offer the same opportunities for those who are less fortunate or lack self-confidence.

"I think it's helped quite a few people. One boy in particular said it keeps him from getting involved in silliness, which is what you do when you're bored."

Mr Dewar was nominated by two of his students to receive the award for services to the arts.

Alliance Dance Unit has up to 100 members and has competed at the prestigious XXL Streetdance UK Championships.

The group used to be based at Watermans in Brentford but moved about a year ago to the nearby Rose Community Centre.

Mr Dewar says the current premises are not ideal for dance, and the group is still seeking a more suitable venue and wants to hear from anyone who might be able to help.
