He may have missed out on an Oscar, but Harrow-born actor Dev Patel still received plenty of plaudits for bringing the most special woman in his life to the Academy Awards ceremony.
The 26-year-old, who was nominated for in the best supporting actor category, took mum Anita to the glitzy Hollywood ceremony on Sunday (February 26) night.
Speaking at the bash with Dev by her side, she proudly said: “It’s a dream to go to the Oscars with your son the actor.
“You always knew he would do well. And he has done so well.”
Dev grew up in Rayners Lane and won a Bafta earlier in February for his performance in Lion .
He was nominated in best supporting actor category but the award went to Mahershala Ali for Moonlight.
Twitter users were quick to praise both Dev and Mrs Patel, who is reported to work at a care centre for the elderly in Wembley.
Dev’s career began in Channel 4’s groundbreaking Skins, before he found international fame in Slumdog Millionaire .
Since then he was he has had star turns in The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel and its sequel, sci-fi Chappie and Aaron Sorkin’s television series The Newsroom, but has said his role in Lion is the one he has been waiting for.
In it, Dev played a man separated from his family in India as a young child, adopted by Australians and who used Google Earth to find his way home.
After winning his Bafta earlier this month, he said: “My mum took me to an open casting of Skins after she saw an advert in Metro newspaper and 10 years on we are here at the Baftas and that is pretty amazing.”
And he is also reported to have said backstage at the Royal Albert Hall event: “I really did not expect it.
“We’ve gone to so many of these award ceremonies and this one was where everything changed on home turf with my family in the audience.
“I used to watch this in Rayners Lane with my parents at the end of the Piccadilly Line, and for all of us to be here in our black and white and to walk the carpet, it’s kind of an out-of-body experience."
