Clothing and homewares retailer Next has begun work to create a new superstore in Hayes.

The 38,770sq-ft store is scheduled to open at Lombardy Retail Park on July 9, housing both home and fashion departments, as well as a café.

It will replace an adjacent Next store, as well as one less than a mile away, at Hayes Bridge Retail Park.

Councillor Douglas Mills, Hillingdon Council's cabinet member for community, commerce and regeneration, said: “We certainly welcome this store and I know that Next are having detailed discussions with Uxbridge Jobcentre Plus about the number of new opportunities they are creating to ensure we get as many people from Hillingdon postcodes into the new jobs as possible.

“It creates not only a new retail opportunity but also a real opportunity for Hillingdon people to get full-time work in the Hayes area.”

Both existing stores are expected to close around a week before the new opening.

The new store, which is currently being gutted, will create a net total of 47 jobs, from sales staff to management positions.

The existing 14,530sq-ft clothing store at Lombardy Retail Park, in Coldharbour Lane, employs 113 staff, while the company's 12,900sq-ft home store at Hayes Bridge Retail Park, in Uxbridge Road, employs 29.

All employees at both existing stores will be offered the chance to relocate to the new branch, the company has said.

Next Group PLC plans to divide its new building – formerly home to Kiddicare – into two units, as well as build a new entrance and install a 26,000sq-ft mezzanine.

The company has more than 500 stores across the UK and Ireland and almost 200 more around the world.
