Police have come under fire for linking a enormous seizure of Class A drugs in Catford to Notting Hill Carnival.

It comes after officers carried out a series of raids on Tuesday (August 22) morning in Lewisham in a bid to disrupt crime ahead of the carnival.

Metropolitan Police published an image of uncut heroin it had seized on its Twitter account and wrote: “In the run up to #NottingHillCarnival, officers have this morning seized what is believed to be a kilo of uncut heroin in #Catford”

However, it sparked a social media backlash, with many questioning the link to the drugs with the carnival.

Nikki Acute said: “This has absolutely no link to Notting Hill Carnival. Scaremongering. Pathetic” while another tweeted: “Hashtagging Notting Hill Carnival when there’s NO CORRELATION between the event and this incident. You’re Reaching.”

Another tweet read: “Catford is about 12 miles away from Notting Hill , in a different borough and takes about an hour to get to on the tube? So the link is?”

Others have taken to mocking the tweet, such as Carli Fish, who wrote: “In the run up to #NottingHillCarnival, I’ve covered my dog with a blanket because it’s too cold in #HemelHempstead.”

It has also been linked to other events: “In the run up to #AlexandraPalaceFoodiesFestival, officers have this morning seized a kilo of uncut heroin in Catford. Busy weekend”

Grime star Stormzy has also had his say, responding: “How many drugs did you lot seize in the run up to Glastonbury or we only doing tweets like this for black events?”

A series of dawn raids took place at 4am on Tuesday, with premises in Kensington and Chelsea, Westminster, Hammersmith and Fulham and Wandsworth also raided.

Police say a total 26 arrests were made, predominantly for possession with intent to supply drugs.
