A man who helped a critically injured pedestrian after he was knocked over by a car in West Kensington has described the "horrific scene".

Jamal Hassan had crossed North End Road near the junction with Mund Street moments before a black Audi A3 crashed into four males walking just behind him.

A man aged 56 and two others in the 20s were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries, but another man, also in his late 20s, is fighting for his life.

Mr Hassan, a trained first aider, used his jacket and T-shirt to help stem the heavy flow of blood coming from the critically injured pedestrian’s head.

Speaking to getwestlondon , he said treatment given by a passing GP who joined him soon after was crucial and praised the quick arrival of the ambulance.

Emergency services at the scene of the accident, on North End Road at the junction with Mund Street, on Wednesday (November 23) evening

The collision happened at around 6.45pm on Wednesday (November 23) evening and the car stopped at the scene.

The incident brought back bitter memories for the 28-year-old dad from Fulham, who had attended the funeral just days earlier of his friends from Acton, Farhad Zubair-Maqbool and Yahya Mohamed Sharif, who had died in a car crash in Essex on Saturday November 12.

Mr Hassan, an accounts manager who works in Hammersmith , was walking home and had just crossed the road just before the incident happened on Wednesday (November 23) evening.

He said: “I was just a couple of steps away from it all.

"When I looked back people were all over the place. It was a horrific scene.

“The guy was bleeding quite a bit. Other people were getting their phones out, but I was thinking of my friends, I went to their funerals on Friday (November 18), and I knew I had to stay calm.

"I knew if I didn’t compress the bleeding he would be gone.”

Police say one of the four men hurt in the crash is in a critical condition

He put his T-shirt to the back and side of the head.

He said: "I tried to open his mouth to unblock his airway but his jaw was locked.

“Then a GP driving home came and helped me.

"He placed him in the recovery position and did first aid. "

He said the GP was the hero.

“Then the ambulance turned up really quickly," he said.

"The GP was taking the pulse and it was getting extremely faint, and the man was turning purple.”

'His leg was badly broken and you could see the bone coming out'

Mr Hassan, who is also a football coach, saw two other men were lying unconscious on the road, and approached the fourth person, who was conscious.

Mr Hassan said: “That guy was screaming like crazy. His leg was badly broken. I told him to breathe and to hold on.”

And he said it was pandemonium at the scene, adding: “Everyone was screaming, there were kids around with their parents coming home from work.

"It really was like a scene from a movie."
