An award-winning scientist who likes to celebrate his discoveries with a pint of beer has been invited to the Chiswick brewery where his favourite tiple comes from.

Fuller’s, London’s only remaining family brewer, were delighted to hear how they have lent a helping hand to world-renowned - and recent Nobel Prize-winner - Professor Peter Higgs.

The man who suggested the existence of the Higgs-Boson or ‘God Particle’ way back in 1964 was in a press conference, when a colleague revealed how he prefers London Pride ale to Champagne .

Professor Higgs was then presented with a bottle, which he held aloft to the crowd of photographers.

The firm of brewers, who have been in Chiswick Lane South, Chiswick, since 1845 even went as far as to point out the caption on this BBC News image suggests London Pride is in fact the building block for all other life forms.

The existence of the God Particle was finally confirmed last yeart and during a flight back from the CERN facility in Switzerland Professor Higgs chose a pint as his celebratory drink.

A Fuller’s spokesperson said: “All at Fuller’s would like to congratulate Professor Higgs on his well-deserved Nobel prize. We are delighted to hear that, as should be the case with all of life’s great celebrations, Professor Higgs marked this fantastic accomplishment with London Pride.

“We would like to invite Professor Higgs and his family down to Fuller’s Griffin Brewery at Chiswick for a proper celebration.”

He added they were considering a limited edition brew in his honour and said while they were happy for the time being concentrating on producing award-winning beers and running pubs it was good to know they had support if they ever chose to diversify into the world of particle physics.
